A wrestlers story
Many of the characters in the original Kinnikuman story lines stand as an homage to real-life wrestlers that were popular through the 1970s-80s and lent inspiration to the creators Yudetemago in Japan during that era. Jesse Maivia embodies ones of these homage characters as inspired by Peter Maivia who for association was the biological grandfather of the well-known wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Portrayed as a powerful island themed traditional strong man with broad shoulders and thick limbs this challenger exudes a confident persona worthy of the wrestling superstar lineage. While not a central hero of the series the blend of parody, homage, and global wrestling culture easily won this figure a spot in the Mattel M.U.S.C.L.E. lineup.
When Mattel launched the M.U.S.C.L.E. (Millions of Unusual Small Creatures Lurking Everywhere) toy line in North America in 1985, only a set number were carried into the new market from Japan. Most children in the market weren’t aware of these associations so as enthusiasts reinvigorate their interest these details are generally welcomed new knowledge.

It’s these kinds of personifications brought to life by the Yudetamago pairs imagination that played a key role in the success of the series. With people all over the world still learning the details and backstory of the characters they came to love long before their origin was common knowledge for their region.
