The boxer wrestler
While the M.U.S.C.L.E. toy line included over 200 unique figure forms among the Millions of Unusual Small Creatures Lurking Everywhere. Their origins from the Japanese Kinnikuman universe places them among even hundreds more. Each as interesting or bizarre as the next with Apollo the giant cut from the same creative cloth as the rest.
As with many of the wrestling themed characters his likeness lends to real world personalities and exaggerated attributes. You may have guessed to combine the boxing movie character Apollo Creed from the Rocky movie, and the legendary professional wrestler André the giant. Together creating this entertaining blend of Kaiju monster meets technical disciplined boxer reflecting the series love of mixing pop culture and over-the-top wrestling battles.
While not a central figure in the story lines the character does serve as a formidable obstacle for the main hero Kinnikuman to which the franchise is named. Humiliating him in a first bout, forcing Kinnikuman to seek comedic Rocky-style training under another gag character named Yosaku. After which our hero returns to confront the might Apollo with his newfound skills and techniques for the victory.
Luckily since Yosaku was so obsessed with boxing underdog movies the match becomes exactly that with a rematch even more comical with classic dramatic boxing parody. Only after surviving Apollo’s relentless punching assaults and trademark attacks like the Great Uppercut as a devastating old-school strike in bouts that are entertaining through the story line.
It’s no doubt young fans of the figures whether with the original Japanese figure forms or the Mattel line on which they were derived found this figure serving some knock-outs in their own imagination driven story lines. With the instant association to a big brute force brawler that just so happens to be based on popular real-world celebrities.
However, we’ll still trying to figure out the details of the characters wardrobe in the figure form. Odd fashion gimmick or serves another purpose? Or what the composition of his anatomy is as he appears rocky himself (unless that’s the gag). Except that’s the beauty of the enormous imaginative roster of superhuman characters brought to us by two talented Japanese friends collectively known as I Yudetamago for which we thank them tremendously.
