An imposing figure fans could associate into their imaginative battles with a form that easily portrays a formidable combatant. The Black Zumou (or, Black Sumo) is another great character likeness found in the 1980s phenomenon known as the Millions of Unusual Creatures Lurking Everywhere (M.U.S.C.L.E.) line of toys. Except as the others, his identity is rooted in an enormous manga universe known as Kinnikuman still popularly produced from his origins in Japan.
Part of the collective roster that includes hundreds of unique characters curated and created by a creative pair of long-time friends who go by the duo identity of Yudetamago. Black Sumo is a relatively minor character that adds to the expansive landscape of interesting characters competing in the worlds of superhuman wrestling combat.
With a likeness to traditional sumo wrestling imagery mixed with creature characteristics that brings a heavy competitor with a fighting style based in sheer brute force. Easily recognizable and memorable in form his identity is connected to the villainous Black Army of which other characters share his prefix surname.
While it’s unknown if the inspiration to his design is associated to a real-life persona like others in the series, he brings supporting character development to the overall story arc appearances. Low center of gravity and enormous weight mixed with power and determination he’s a tournament focused side character that fans come to appreciate in his figure.
To collectors of the Mattel toy series that was introduced rebranded primarily for the English-speaking markets his purple form of figure is one of the most common. Easily stacking duplicates and giving more appeal to the other colors of his production.
Regardless of your knowledge to his origins & identity, he’s a figure that pretty much poses the universal form of “Let’s Wrestle!”. Which is another reason why fans still love the series today.
