Samurai lizard
With a face only a mother could love and a personality to match, it’s no wonder why this grimacing villain found fans for the figure. To the fans introduced to the character by the rebranded M.U.S.C.L.E. toy series imported by Mattel though, his identity was lost thanks to licensing and marketing decisions. Otherwise, we would have known the role Dai Ukon brought in his origins amongst the hundreds of unique characters found the Kinnikuman manga and anime franchise from Japan.
Originally introduced during the series large-scale tournament arcs, this interesting creature commands Ukon clan. A villainous sect of antagonist creatures reflecting the fondness for blending historical themes and imagination shared by the creative pair of friends from Japan who go by the shared moniker of Yudetamago.
His name and visual design is believed to lend itself as a reference to a Sengoku period samurai general named Takatora Tōdō who suffixed his name with Ukon as a court title rather than a surname. While this theory isn’t confirmed, his samurai styled likeness and general menacing demeanor allow for your imagination to create any number of story lines fitting the form.
His techniques rely on tremendous physical strength and disciplined wrestling moves rather than supernatural or extraordinary powers like other contenders. Playing into the role as a secondary background character without recurring appearances. That aside, his character became a memorable figure in the toy series that is still produced and immensely popular even today.
Many fans like the feudal Samurai approach to the character combining reptilian form with historical tribute. For collectors of the Mattel toys from the 1980s know this figure as one of the first color sets often completed for his common inclusion in packs.
Either way, this unique Chojin is another one of the hundreds in the roster of Kinnikuman that continue to captivate fans worldwide.
