A prismatic opponent
Appearing in the early arcs of the Kinnikuman lore, Diaman is one of the more obscure but distinctive characters in the series. As his name suggest by translation he’s a body modeled after a massive diamond with a crystalline appearance.
His role served as a physical challenge meant to test the determination of challengers with his durability allowing him to withstand hits that may defeat other Chojin wrestlers. The diamond form of the figure grants him crushing attacks using his points as battering weapons.
A toughness from both a hard defense and offense is the power he brought to many kids in the American market when Mattel licensed certain characters for the M.U.S.C.L.E. toy series. Easily making him a nostalgic favorite for many growing up during that time.
Though not one of the franchise’s headline stars, Diaman’s unusual design and durable persona embody the creative eccentricity that made the original creators Yudetagamago so admired. Mixing a natural based science fiction element was a common theme you can find throughout the manga story line adding fun to memories of their introduction.
Collector Controversy
While the MUSCLE.toys collection displayed may be missing a BLUE example from the archive image, there’s also another far more rare example potentially floating around the wild yet to be discovered and added to the archive as well! See, there were two original promotional posters available for the series back in the 1980s, one is the most commonly recognized poster including the 233 “poster set” images in their most basic “Fleshy” form color, and another version that appeared with various colored versions of the same figures depicted on it.
On the color version of this promo poster is a mysterious little fellow displayed for Diaman in a GREEN version which never seemed to have found his way into the general distribution for the new consumer market. A figure which the collector community still seeks to find a legitimate example of and confirm its existence.
