Armored menace
Coming in a memorable form but as a minor antagonist character noted for his medieval knight inspired elements on a superhuman wrestling creature. We don’t get to know his face, but many years later many collectors may still be learning his actual identity. Hailing from the enormous universe of creative characters in the popular Japanese manga and anime franchise known as Kinnikuman this historically exaggerated creature is known as Black Knight II.
When Mattel secured the distribution licensing to import a selection of the figures based on their original Kinkeshi (Kinnikuman-Keshi, with “keshi” translating to “eraser” in English) he was among the rebranded series affectionately known as M.U.S.C.L.E. A uniquely entertaining carry-over the original franchise built over decades by two long-time friends from Japan collectively known as Yudetamago.
Drawing likeness from the recognizable European knights from medieval times to bring a character to life that instills thoughts of folklore and fantasy is exactly the kind of creativity the franchise is loved for. Bringing his darkly clad armored champion emphasizing discipline and physical presence that quickly became memorable to fans worldwide even though his character appearances are very minor.
This straight-forward character design primarily plays a role in the expansive roster of unique background characters that often highlight moments of tournaments and larger battles. His techniques focus primarily on heavy strikes and classic brute-force style wrestling tactics. With his durable armor providing a way to absorb punishment from other combatants.
As with many of the minor appearance characters in the story arcs his backstory and finer details remain mysterious even if all these years you may have not even known his name. Lending a touch of additional fantasy to the possibilities his form could serve in the imaginations of fans.
Whether you knew it or not you likely already were close to his name simply by the recognizable presentation in his physique and details. Either way, he’s just one of the hundreds of reasons we have come to <3 the series even still and into the future.
