Assaulting artifact

An interesting figure design inspired from ancient origins that most fans who were introduced to it in the Mattel Millions of Unusual Small Creatures Lurking Everywhere (M.U.S.C.L.E.) toy series likely didn’t know. Based on an ancient Japanese Dogū figure (translated to “Earthen figure”) from the Jōmon period of Japan it’s unclear why he’s called Haniwa (a different form of figure from the Kofun period). However, this traditional character design brings a unique presence from his inclusion in the original Kinnikuman franchise where all the M.U.S.C.L.E. figures originated in Japan.

A minor Ancient Chojin exlusively appearing in the 1985 animated film the Justice Chojin vs Ancient Chojin he’s a short lived minor antagonist serving under the primary antagonist the Satan King. Who sends his followers to attack the franchise heroes in the Justice Chojin faction as part of his plan to conquer Earth by force.

With his distinctive oversized almost goggle-like eyed and stylized body associated with the ancient figurines, his identity as a Haniwa is incorrect but propagated so much in the western interpretation that we continue his naming here. Even though in the film he emerges from a Museum display of dogū figurines in the Aomori Prefecture transforming an archeological artifact into a supernatural wrestling villain.

Kinnikuman - Haniwa Satan

While in the western cultures the idea of a singular evil entity known as Satan is the norm. In the traditional Japanese notion of Shinto and Buddhism there is no single, all-powerful devil or Satan figure as a central personification of evil.

Instead the spiritual world as a spectrum of “unpure” figures exist that can be a state of being most all gods or spirits can transition to or from. A unique characteristic personified by many of the characters in the enormous universe the original creators who go by the collective name of Yudetamago still popularly produce in the Kinnikuman franchise.
