Kinniku Daiou
As his more regal name using Daiou as (Great King Kinniku) Mayumi is the proud yet often comedically hot-tempered ruler of Planet Kinniku and the father of the series hero Kinnikuman himself. The creative duo Yudetamago portrayed the character with slapstick humor and a source of exaggerated royal authority who supports his son’s growth into a champion.
In his younger days Mayumi was also a formidable wrestler with classic Kinniku style grappling and raw strength. Despite his bluster and occasional pompous personality, he’s a welcome protagonist in the series that made it the cut for the new North American markets where his identity was only evidenced by the word on his shirt.
When Mattel franchised the figures from the original keshi line he appeared as #20 on the promotional poster many kids were fond of both then and today. Sporting a stocky build with a menacing facial expression distinguish him from the younger wrestlers and the figure bears a persona of maturity.
The solid frame and density of the figure made it a fan favorite from the day, but many buyers of the figures wouldn’t have known about his status among the Kinnikuman royalty. Adding a bit of mystery as to the meaning of the word on his chest later found to be his name. Now we know he was a comedic monarch with powerhouse wrestling background.
