Never thought about a flathead screw becoming a super humanoid wrestler in an expansive universe filled with a still growing and enormous roster of unique and creative combatant characters? Well luckily Screw Man was already on the job from the entertaining minds of the artistic pair of friends that originally created his persona for their Kinnikuman manga and anime. Fans introduced to the character via the Mattel imported versions of the originals know as Kinkeshi in Japan, wouldn’t have known his origins in the deep Japanese story arcs from the duo team collectively known as Yudetamago in Japan.
A minor but memorable character in the long running Kinnikuman series, he found new identities in the imaginations of the western market fans with the M.U.S.C.L.E. toy line. Instead of licensing their original identities and storylines Mattel opted to instead rebrand the figures with different color variants and material used than the softer keshi versions sold in Japan. They landed on a play on the name of their origins (“Kinnikuman” being Japanese for “muscle man“) becoming M.U.S.C.L.E. or the Millions of Unusual Creatures Lurking Everywhere.
This antagonist villain appears in the Dream Chojin Tag arc teaming with Kendaman as part of the Hell’s Missionaries in a design exactly as his name suggests. Modeled directly with an everyday hardware store screw concept in mind he adds another interesting form of supporting character the story lines are known for.
One of his signature techniques spins him at an extremely high speed essentially making him a human drill press along with other drill or screw inspired attacks for a chaotic presence in his appearances. Adding to the hundreds of entertaining characters ranging from the obscure, to bizarre, to macabre, to just plain silly archetypes that dot the series landscape.
Often blending comedy and gimmicky antics for entertaining the audience especially more in the early story arcs while adding depth and direction to certain characters as they mature. We may yet see Screw Kid take a greater role but which form was your favorite? Because his character appears more than once in the figure lines.
Screw Kid stands out to many as a nostalgic memory from the epic battles with siblings and friends growing up and for obvious reasons. A little imagination and you could find a place for him in combat, but now that more is being learned and sought in translation, it’s also cool to know who actually is before Mattel left his identity behind.
