A dark contendor
There are many obscure characters in the Kinnikuman universe, as to the roles they played in the imaginations of English speaking markets that didn’t know their stories there was even less to know. Originally playing a role as an antagonist robot fighter created to challenge heroes in the American Chojin Tag Team Tournament, this figure known as Black Shadow is a briefly appearing challenger in the series.
Constructed by a mischievous Chojin named Kinkotsuman to team up with with Iwao in the American Tag Team Tournament. Attack emphasis in his design and created without a mouth to surrender he ends up being ripped apart by Skull Bozu and Devil Magician in a later bout.
Though a very minor secondary character his likeness took on a new persona when imported to the Americas by Mattel marketed as M.U.S.C.L.E. with his new story written by the imaginations of children through the new regions. His textured upper armor and imposing horns found their way into many playground battles of the day.
It’s unknown if the characters original creators Yudetamago have more inclusive plans to revive the figure in future story arcs. However, that’s the beauty of learning the original story behind a character that could become any number of different story subjects. Either way, he was a favorite figure for many collectors along the way.
